The Origins of Judo and Jigoro Kano’s Legacy in Education

Judo is not just an Olympic sport or a martial art — it is a philosophy of life that unites body, mind, and values. Created in Japan in the late 19th century, Judo was born from the innovative vision of Jigoro Kano (1860–1938), an educator, philosopher, and martial arts master who believed that physical practice should be deeply connected to moral and intellectual development.

When Did Judo Begin?

In 1882, Kano founded the Kodokan in Tokyo, which remains to this day the world’s central hub for Judo. Inspired by traditional schools of Jiu-Jitsu, he transformed combat techniques into an educational system that prioritized safety, discipline, and cooperation. More than defeating an opponent, the true purpose of Judo is self-improvement and contributing to society.

Who Was Jigoro Kano?

Jigoro Kano was far more than a martial arts master — he was a visionary educator. As the first Japanese member of the International Olympic Committee, he advocated for the inclusion of sport in modern education, believing that physical development was inseparable from intellectual and moral growth. His guiding principles, “Seiryoku Zen’yō” (maximum efficiency with minimum effort) and “Jita Kyōei” (mutual prosperity), remain the essence of Judo today.

Judo and Education

Judo quickly expanded beyond the dojo and became part of the Japanese school system, shaping generations of students. Its principles teach:

  • Respect and discipline – every practice begins and ends with a bow, cultivating humility and courtesy.

  • Resilience and self-confidence – learning to fall and rise again is a metaphor for life itself.

  • Cooperation and community – personal progress is only possible through partnership with others.

Today, according to the International Judo Federation, Judo is practised in over 200 countries and is recognized by UNESCO as one of the most complete sports for children, as it develops body, mind, and social values.

A Living Legacy at Vanguard
