Biography

Instructor, Vanguard Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Judo

Paul has been immersed in martial arts for most of his life, beginning Shotokan Karate at age 12 and earning his black belt under Hidetaka Nishiyama in 1992. While at university, he discovered Judo, earning his black belt from Judo Canada in 2000. Inspired by watching the first UFC event, Paul recognized the importance of grappling and eventually began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2009. Ten years later, in 2019, he was awarded his black belt by Professor Rodrigo Resende, having been one of Rodrigo’s first students in Edmonton.

At Vanguard, Paul is known for his discipline, mental toughness, and steady guidance on the mats. Whether it’s helping a new student grasp fundamentals or refining advanced techniques with experienced teammates, he brings patience and respect to every class. His favourite moments in teaching come from seeing students apply techniques they have worked on together successfully in live training.

Outside the academy, Paul serves in both the military and law enforcement. He values Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an essential form of defensive training as well as a lifelong way to stay fit and resilient. Dedicated and loyal to his teammates, Paul continues to lead by example, showing how martial arts can build strength of character as well as skill.
